Red Seal Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic, Lindsay Black, is a testament to the hard work and dedication that our Red Seal HVAC technicians put into their trade. Lindsay has just achieved this certification, which takes years to complete. To celebrate, we sat down with Lindsay to learn more about her journey with the building management system and HVAC company.

You just received your Red Seal Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic certification, congratulations! How do you feel?

It feels good. I was very relieved when I found out I passed. I feel really good looking back on where I started. It took four levels of school, each lasting eight weeks, which is 7,300 hours of work-based training. In total that’s about four-ish years. All of the schooling time and apprenticeship is about 10,000 hours.

How did working with Kimco throughout your apprenticeship impact your journey?

I feel like it impacted my journey hugely and in a super positive way. They’re incredible with automation, HVAC, and electrical training. If I ever felt like I needed anything they’re fully there to help provide training and all the techs were incredible, helpful and knowledgeable. There are no stupid questions, and mistakes are just opportunities for learning. At other places, you can feel like if you make a mistake it’s bad, but they just ask if you learned from your mistake. It’s incredible and not common.

Why did you want to work in HVAC?

I’ve done lots of jobs that were more hands-on. A tree nursery, snowboard parks … My brother is a Red Seal carpenter, I did welding in high school and I knew it was interesting. Then, I was bartending at a restaurant and a regular who worked in HVAC in Kelowna suggested it to me. He suggested I do some ride alongs and the people I did it with seemed to really love their jobs.

What’s next for you?

Right now I’m learning about water treatment maintenance. It’s really interesting, there’s so much to know in the trades in general, even if it’s just building up my confidence as a Journeyperson. There aren’t many companies that offer water treatment, or even opportunities to train people further. Kimco is so great at that. It’s a never-ending learning journey.

For HVAC, automation and electrical in Kelowna and interior B.C. that’s built on expertise and passion, work with a company invested in employee growth. Learn more about how Kimco can help your career and training today.
