Meet our HVAC, Automation and Electrical Team: Cole C.

Moving the HVAC, automation and electrical industry forward in a sustainable way is just one of the reasons our Automation Project Manager, Cole C., loves what he does. 

After moving to Kelowna from Saskatchewan to be closer to family, Cole C. is still with Kimco 10 years later and loves what he does in the automation and electrical sector. We caught up with the Automation Project Manager, who's passionate about sustainable innovations in the industry, as part of our series celebrating our employees. 

What do you enjoy about the building automation industry? 

You're always learning. It's never dull or stale, and things are always moving forward. There are always different and better ways of doing things; you're not just putting lights and plugs in like standard electrical stuff. It's a thrilling field to build a long-lasting career. 

Has anything surprised you about the industry over the years?

The exciting thing is just how much more efficient we can make buildings using building automation services and other innovations. That's a significant driver in the newest technologies in the field. We're utilizing geo fields well and more efficiently. We're trying to incorporate other sources, not just natural gas but electric, and how you can use that more efficiently through heat pumps and other components. Being more sustainable it's a big driver because it's essential for everyone in the long term. 

Where did you start at Kimco, and how did you get to where you are now?

I started as a regular help installer on sites and slowly started running my jobs. It was a natural progression kind of thing. Before Kimco, I worked as a certified electrician for 20 years and did many different things, residential, commercial, industrial, fire alarm, data — this is the longest I've been in one thing for the electrical side, but it just kept getting more interesting. Every building control system we would go to is different. Nothing is stagnant in a heat pump system, sometimes a boiler system. There are always new challenges, which are always interesting.

What do you like about the culture here at Kimco?

They've always been flexible with me, with a good work-life balance so I can be there for my family. 

What can we find you doing outside of work?

I have three kids, and part of the reason we moved out here was for the skiing and vacation lifestyle. We ski as a family or play football with the kids every weekend.
