Continuing our series celebrating our employees, we’re pleased to introduce you to Karyn D. As HVAC Administrator, Karyn is hard at work behind the scenes helping make the magic happen. Also, a classical piano teacher, bodybuilder, and former English teacher, Karyn, who has been with Kimco since 2011 and came to Canada from South Africa almost 23 years ago, wears many hats and is passionate about nurturing growth in others. Get to know Karyn in our Q&A!

How did you get into the HVAC industry?

Back home in South Africa, my dad had a part’s store. I would do a bunch of admin work for him and grew up in the HVAC equipment industry. The background served me well to go to Train Calgary and eventually Kimco. Invoicing is a unique vocabulary, translating all the bits and bobs so that any accountant can pick up an invoice and understand. It’s like translating another language. The more years of experience you have in that field, the more suited you are to the position just because of the verbiage and the technical jargon from the HVAC and building automation services industry that goes with it.

What do you love about the industry?

I'm also a professional classical piano teacher, but I enjoy business as well. So I've combined the two. I enjoy business. And then my creative side gets taken care of with teaching. It's the best of both worlds. I enjoy the fast pace, I have this crazy love for the pressure and can operate under deadlines, so combining the two is great.

What’s a day in the life at Kimco like for you?

It can be unpredictable, especially in this company. A lot of things can be weather-related. There’s quite a bit of digging that goes into assisting customers and looking at their history. I can plan my day but it can change completely at the drop of a hat.

What do you love about working here?

It's a lovely company to work for and in. Each HVAC technician is great. Everybody does their part and takes ownership of what they do. Most of us have been here several years, so you get used to working with people, and you formulate your own sort of modus operandi with each person, and everyone brings their gift to the plate. It works well. You also get to build relationships with and get to know your clients, which is huge. I think the clients have a sense of security knowing who is going to be helping them as well. I'd like to stay for as long as possible.

What are you passionate about outside of your work?

Music, family, and I have very strong faith. Those are my main things. I’m passionate about people, seeing them grow and be successful, including the HVAC and electrician technicians. You see them grow in the time they're with us. And, with my students, I find it a huge privilege to be able to leave a legacy in people’s lives. It’s humbling and it’s a privilege. I take it very seriously. Also — working out. I have a background in bodybuilding, so I encourage people who have physical challenges and write programs for them. I love seeing their progress and what it means to them to meet these rehabilitation challenges head-on. I really enjoy seeing people’s development. It makes me feel alive as a person.
