The high standard of building automation, electrical, and HVAC services you’ve come to rely on from Kimco is the result of a team effort from our experts. That’s why we’re celebrating our team and helping you meet the people behind our services.
Meet our Red Seal HVAC technician, Ryan P. Ryan has been with Kimco since 2014, when he was looking for a change and found his way back home working in HVAC in Kelowna.
How did you get your start in HVAC?
I had been working in northern Alberta which took me out of town quite a bit so I wanted a career change where I could stay closer to home and start a family. My wife and I wanted to come back to the Okanagan, where I grew up. I started searching around and saw there was a need for HVAC technicians and just kind of got into it that way. I went to school and did my pre-apprenticeship with a couple of other HVAC companies. I was actually in my fourth year with somebody that worked for Kimco and that’s how I got my start here.
What do you like about working in the trades?
Working in the trades — working in this trade in particular — there's a lot to learn and a lot of different aspects to it. So, you know, one day you could be working on a boiler the next day you could be working on rooftop units. There are so many different types of HVAC equipment you can be working on on a given day. It's very diverse, so it keeps you on your toes and keeps it interesting.
What’s a day in the life for you as an HVAC technician in Kelowna?
It's all over the place. You could have a day where you're scheduled for maintenance and you could spend one day at one site, just performing maintenance, checking over equipment. The next day you could be running around doing service calls. If you get a heatwave or a cold snap, the majority of your time is spent running around helping people get their systems back up and running, troubleshooting, and doing repairs. You could have a mix of that as well. You could start the day off doing some maintenance and if service calls come in and you can get pulled off what you're doing and start going around doing service calls. So no two days are the same.

Has anything surprised you about the industry over the years?
Going into it you don't realise how much is involved with the mechanical systems we deal with. You have to be an electrician, a plumber, a millwright, a certified A gas fitter. People don't realise how much is involved with these systems and the knowledge you have to gain over time. You go through your apprenticeship, that’s about a five-year process. You get your ticket and it's almost your ticket to start learning. That's when the real learning begins: after you've got your Red Seal Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic ticket. Even 10 years in you're still learning every day.
After seven years, what keeps you with Kimco?
It's a lot to do with the culture. It's a local company. They treat their employees well, and fairly. They've got a good name and good brand behind them. You know, they're very well known in the community and they're a busy company and keep us busy year-round. In this industry, there can be shoulder seasons where the work tapers off a little bit, but here they always keep us busy. It's just an all-around good company to work for.
What can we find you doing when you’re not at work?
Outside of work, well, I've got a young family, so I spend a lot of time with them. Our kids are in the sport, dance, and lots of outdoor activities. We do a lot of camping, fishing. Anything outdoors, we spend a lot of time outside.
